How To Learn a New Skill

One of the best ways to expand your resume, excel at your job and improve as a person is to learn new skills. However, the prospect of spending the time and effort to attempt to learn a new skill can often seem daunting. It can become a much more reasonable task if you break it down into a few components that are easier to comprehend and then tackle. Using this guide as a frame of reference can help you get started growing your skillset and becoming a more well-rounded individual.

The first step is to identify what skill you would like to learn.

Once you know which one to pursue, you should follow that by identifying which of your current skills can be used as a foothold. (Like walking before running!) In other words, the skills you currently have can help build towards more elaborate competencies. You can also identify what potential challenges you will face. This can be difficult at first, so do not get overwhelmed and give up! After all that comes one of the first truly complex parts, devising ways to overcome the challenges you identified. Hopefully, you should be able to use some of your current skill set to accomplish this, but if not, the next tip should prove useful.

Identify and take advantage of any resources you can find.

Learning a new skill is easier than ever with the wealth of information available, especially on the internet. One of the best ways to learn is by having someone teach you, and that still applies to learning skills through tutorials. The chances are good that any skill you want to grasp, other people, have mastered it and are eager to share how. A quick web search can reveal a suite of free guides and tutorials and some available for purchase created by professionals.

Lastly, remember that it is best not to divide up your focus.

Dividing up your focus can be detrimental to learning and can result in backsliding. Instead, focus on learning a skill one at a time. You will see faster and more noticeable progress when you put all your effort into one task. Now, that is not to say you should not take breaks, but try not to go after more than a couple skills at once. You can learn about burn-out here.

Additional tip!

You could use as well. It can be helpful to keep a log of your efforts and accomplishments when learning a skill, as that gives you a method of measuring and visualizing the progress you have made. Seeing yourself improve can be one of the most gratifying feelings and can often be great motivation to seek new talent or craft.

And there are a few great ways to learn new skills quick! Getting experience through things like volunteering along the way will help you find your dream job!
