Employee Spotlight: Andrea LaRoe

When Andrea LaRoe walked into Supplemental Staffing for an interview in 2012, she had no idea what temp services even were. What started as an "unsure" decision recommended by a friend has blossomed into a 13-year career journey that she now calls "probably the best 'unsure' decision I ever made."
From Front Desk to Finance
Andrea's career trajectory at Supplemental Staffing reads like a testament to the company's commitment to making great employment matches. Starting as a front desk receptionist in 2012, she moved into a support role three years later and then transitioned to the payroll department in 2016. Today, she serves as the company's Payroll Manager, a role she's held for the past nine years.
"I had never worked in payroll prior to working here," Andrea reflects. "I have always loved numbers but never pursued anything in the payroll field." Her journey demonstrates how the right company culture can help employees discover and develop talents they never knew they had. Yet, the management team identified her abilities and knew where she'd excel.
Embracing Change and Growth
One of Andrea's proudest professional moments came during a significant change in 2021 when the company switched back-end software systems. While others felt nervous about the transition, Andrea embraced it head-on. "I said challenge accepted! I embraced the change and really dove deep into ensuring I could have the knowledge to help my team as much as possible."
Her dedication to mastering the new system paid off. For the past four years, the company owners have flown her to Minnesota to attend their software company's conferences, where she continues to expand her expertise and bring valuable knowledge back to her team.
A Family-First Philosophy
What sets Supplemental Staffing apart from competitors, according to Andrea, is its genuine family atmosphere. She recalls a pivotal moment during her orientation when the company president told her:
"Every person that walks through our door must be treated with respect and kindness, because if it weren't for our employees, we would not have jobs."
"He said this with passion and I could tell he was serious. That resonated with me!" Andrea says. "Working for a business that treats you as a family member, in and outside of the office, is not always what you find within a company."
This philosophy extends beyond words to tangible investments in employee development. Supplemental Staffing regularly sends staff to conferences, seminars, and classes, then brings everyone together for monthly corporate meetings where knowledge is shared across all branch offices. "The owners even bring in breakfast and treats for us - added bonus!" Andrea adds with a smile.
Breaking Down Staffing Misconceptions
Andrea's initial unfamiliarity with staffing services gives her unique insight into common misconceptions about the industry. "I thought it would be a temporary job," she admits. "However, I learned that there are many more opportunities available. We have short and long-term assignments, temp to hire, and direct hire positions."
This diversity of options allows Supplemental Staffing to meet varying customer needs while providing job seekers with multiple pathways to career development.
Life Beyond the Office
A devoted sports fan who "can watch any sport and get into it," Andrea's office reflects her passions with University of Michigan "GO BLUE" memorabilia and Boston Celtics items. She admits there's some good-natured "teasing" during football season, but it's all part of the fun family atmosphere.
After 22 years of cheering from the sidelines at her children's sporting events, Andrea is entering a new phase of life. With her youngest son having just graduated high school after finishing his final basketball season, she's looking forward to her newfound free time. "Looks like I will need to pick up a new hobby," she laughs.
Words to Live and Work By
Andrea's approach to productivity is refreshingly simple: "Touch it once!!! If you're working on something, finish it." This philosophy has clearly served her well throughout her career advancement at Supplemental Staffing.
Her organized office, filled with autographed memorabilia and family photos, tells the story of someone who values both professional achievement and personal relationships - much like the company culture she's helped build and maintain.
Looking Forward
As Andrea concludes, her Spotlight reflects both her personal growth and the company's mission:
"Whether you are looking for a job, or you have a need within your company, Supplemental Staffing will use all of our resources to assist you in any way! All hands on deck to accomplish your goal and help you succeed!"
After 13 years, Andrea LaRoe stands as a shining example of how the right company culture, combined with personal dedication and a willingness to embrace new challenges, can transform an uncertain beginning into a fulfilling career journey.
